Delhi, NY--Sportsfield Specialties Inc. (SSI) of Delhi has completed its first-ever equipment order for the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, shipping eight of its innovative PortaPitch portable pitching mounds to the popular multi-sport training and competition facility outside Orlando, FL. Each year the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex hosts thousands of baseball players for tournaments and training sessions. The SSI PortaPitch units will be utilized whenever its multi-purpose grass fields are configured for baseball.
The PortaPitch is the only portable pitching mound that matches the 18’ diameter of an official major league mound and meets both the 10” height and slope-to-finished-grade requirements. It has seven structural sections and when assembled features a clay filled center section and an official pitching rubber to give it the feel of a permanent clay mound. It also features a drop-down wheel system for transport that enables grounds crews to change sports on a multi-purpose field in less than an hour.
Besides its versatility and durability, the PortaPitch allows pitchers to move naturally when pitching and fielding. Portable fiberglass mounds used previously at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex often sustained spike damage and needed replacement.
“We are extremely pleased that the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex has chosen our PortaPitch for its multi-sport fields,” said Wayne Oliver, President of SSI. “It was designed and constructed for heavy duty use so this will be a great opportunity to demonstrate its durability and realistic playability to players and their coaches.”
Baseball has become an increasingly important segment of SSI’s overall manufacturing business. Its product line includes foul poles, backstop netting systems, batting tunnels, dugouts, benches, and bat and helmet storage units. In addition, its subsidiary, Promats Athletics of Salisbury, NC provides a wide range of protective padding for stadium walls, dugouts and railings for pro and college teams.
